The reality about jobs….

In a day and age where we are constantly pushing for more and more training, it’s important to remember that there are many ways to accomplish this besides by going to college and ending up with huge student loan debt that need to be repaid.  There are many jobs available today,  for skilled workers.  What does that have to do with special education?  It’s critical that  students  have the opportunity to take as many hands-on career and technical classes as possible – – if this is a possible career interest area.  It’s important that they experience first hand the satisfaction (and sometimes frustration) of making/creating something on their own.  It’s important that they learn how to “do” and not just learn how to “sit!”

Mike Rowe, famous from the show “Dirty Jobs” has made it his mission to help us remember that we critically need skilled workers yet today.  This was not a publicity stunt for ratings.  Mike is so passionate about this he addressed the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee on May 5th, 2011.   He discussed the need for change in the work force of USA’s citizens to promote skilled trades as a desired job, rather than that being exclusive to jobs that requires a 4 year degree or more.  Watch his appeal here:

Mr. Rowe has since then started a foundation that has great information, including potential scholarships.  Check it out at http://www.mikeroweworks.com/mikes-office/giving-back/   Mike Rowe
